A new electric fence starts with the wall or fence line. We measure the perimeter, check the wall tops and gate positions, and plan the number of strands, bracket type and energiser size for the length of fence and the level of security you want. Brackets, insulators and wire are fitted in line, tensioned properly and earthed correctly — poor earthing is the most common reason a fence gives a weak shock.
Most repair call-outs are for fences that are shorting or constantly alarming. On the coast, the usual causes are vegetation touching the wires, broken or cracked insulators, corroded joints and wires that have lost tension. We walk the fence, test it section by section and fix the actual fault, then check the energiser, battery and siren.
An electric fence installed after 1 October 2012 needs an electric fence system certificate under the Electrical Machinery Regulations, 2011, including when a property changes ownership. Unlike an electrical COC, that certificate does not expire and transfers with the property. We build fences to meet the requirements so the certificate can be issued.
