We check and level the base first, use adhesive matched to the tile and substrate, and back-butter large tiles so there are no hollow spots.
Large-format tiles — 600×600 and 600×1200 — are the most popular choice now. They need a flatter base and more careful handling than small tiles, and a levelling system so the edges sit flush. Done properly, they give a clean, modern floor with far fewer grout lines to keep clean.
In wet areas, tiling goes on top of waterproofing, not instead of it. Showers and bathroom floors are waterproofed and given proper falls to the drain before a single tile goes down.
